Is it possible to reformat a mac without a CD/DVD drive?

Now that macbook airs and even many macbook pro models come without CD drives, your only option to reformat is to put a fresh copy of the latest OSX (yosemite right now) only an external drive or a USB drive.

Then you just have to make the mac drive bootable, and you can reformat without any problems.
